How to Install a Door Knob

Basic prepped door

Door knobs are incredibly easy to install.  Your door will have a large hole going from one side to the other where the knob goes.  It will also have a small hole in the side of the door where the latch goes.

Starting off

Start by inserting the latch into the hole in the side of the door so that the beveled edge faces the door jamb.  Put one side of the door knob into the hole, making sure to put the correct side of the knob on the correct side of the door.  You don’t want to get the whole knob put together to find out you put it on backwards…I’ve been there before myself.

Connecting the Sides

Put the other side of the door knob into the other side of the door.  You may have some trouble making sure they connect properly so go slowly if you need to.  I find that Schlage knobs are easier to connect properly.  Insert the long screws into the holes to attach the two sides of the knob.  Don’t tighten completely yet.

Tightening the Screws

Insert the face plate of the door knob into the mortised side of the door and screw on with the included wood screws.  Once the face plate is attached, then you should tighten the large screws that attach the two sides of the knob.
